Home   PARENTS   STARFALL | Learn to Read! [RESOURCES]

Last month we posted an article reviewing Zoodles [oringal post], an online resource for parents and children to enjoy online educational material and games. Since then, we’ve received numerous emails with feedback from parents and teachers providing us with other resources and outlets to keep your child’s brain active outside of the classroom.

While following up on the feedback provided, we stumbled across a site similar to Zoodles,  called Starfall. While it may not be the “prettiest” or “flashiest” site on the web, it’s content is pretty solid. Through the vision of the Polis-Schutz family. Dr. Stephen Schutz and poet Susan Polis Schutz, Starfall was created help educate and create a passion for reading.

Not only does Starfall help and teach your little one how to read through interactive apps and games, but Starfall also offers multiple shapes, colors, and math activities too. Like Zoodles, Starfall consumes 95% of the screen, which allows your child to focus on the activity vs wondering through other programs on the pc. Another plus is that everything is BIG, colorful and simplified so even if you’re not in the room, they can navigate to the next activity by themselves. The biggest advantage Starfall has over all the other sites we’ve visited, is that it’s 100% FREE! No upgrade, No “Pro” version, etc. Check out the a video demonstration and screenshots below… Let us know what you think!

Starfall.com opened in September of 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read with phonics. Our systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice, is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.

In May of 2009, we released the Starfall Kindergarten Reading and Language Arts Curriculum. Our method of instruction motivates children in an atmosphere of imagination and enthusiasm, provides opportunities for child-directed instruction, and supports English language learners and struggling readers learning alongside their peers. Please visit The Starfall Store for other low-cost phonics journals and books paralleling this website.
